Day 1 – Jan 8: Shanghai-Huangshan City-Yellow Mountain

This morning, we will take a high speed train from Shanghai to Huangshan City. Upon arrival, we commence the journey to the Yellow Mountain, which entails a 1-hr private transfer by coach, a shuttle hop to the cable car station, a fast cable car ride taking everyone up to the Yellow Mountain, followed by a ~45min hike before we finally arrive at our hotel. As you exit the cable car, there will be porters available for hire to carry your luggage.

Day 2 to 5 – Jan 9 to 12: Yellow Mountain

Each of these 4 days starts before dawn in order to catch the magnificent sunrise. We will then return to the hotel for breakfast and some rest. Later in the day, we will be trekking up and down the Yellow Mountain’s many overgrown peaks where, tucked away amidst craggy granite overhangs and pine trees, you can find hidden hot springs and vantage points offering splendid panoramic views of the surrounding peaks that burst and break through the rolling sea of clouds. Every evening, we will gather for dinner and group discussion.

Day 6 – Jan 13: Yellow Mountain-Huangshan City-Shanghai

After a final morning photo shoot, we bid farewell to the Yellow Mountain, and make our way downhill by cable car, and then a shuttle hop followed by a private transfer to Huangshan North Railway Station to catch a highspeed train back to Shanghai, where we spend the night

Day 7 – Jan 14: Shanghai-Kunming-Yuanyang

This morning, we fly from Shanghai to Kunming. Upon arrival, you will be transferred from Kunming Airport directly to Yuanyang (6-7hr drive). Upon arrival, the group will have dinner and discuss the plan for shooting the rice terraces.

Day 8 to 12 – Jan 15 to 19: Yuanyang

The general schedule for the four full days of shooting the Yuanyang Rice Terraces is to wake up early to catch the sunrise lighting up the terrace waters and make the morning mists glow as they drift over the terraces’ rolling hills. Then, the group will visit a local market or other cultural attraction to experience the Hani and Yi ethnic minority cultures. After that, it’s back to the hotel for lunch and a rest before heading out again to shoot at another location for the rest of the day. Then, in the evening, there will be dinner and group discussion to exchange ideas, tips, suggestions and analysis the day’s pictures.

Day 13 – Jan 20: Yuanyang to Kunming

After a final morning shoot in Yuanyang, we hit the road for the transfer back to Airport  Kunming (6-7hr drive)  we will catch the flight from Kunming to Shanghai, where the workshop concludes.

Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)

“Huang” meaning “yellow” and “shan” meaning “mountain”. One writer remarked on the view of the clouds from Huangshan as follows: “To enjoy the magnificence of a mountain, you have to look upwards in most cases. To enjoy Mount Huangshan, however, you’ve got to look downward.” That writer was referring to the Sea of Clouds, which is named quite literally. The area also is host to notable light effects, such as the renowned sunrises. Watching the sunrise is considered a “mandatory” part of visiting the area. A phenomenon known as Buddha’s Light is also well-known and, on average, Buddha’s Light only appears a couple of times per month.

The Yellow Mountain are a mountain range in southern Anhui province in eastern China. It was named Huangshan in 747 AD in recognition of the legendary Huang Di, who was the reputed ancestor of the Chinese people and who supposedly made magic pills of immortality here. The area is well known for its scenery, sunsets, peculiarly-shaped granite peaks, pine trees, hot springs and winter snow. Huangshan is a frequent subject of traditional Chinese paintings and literature, as well as modern photography

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of China’s major tourist destinations. Huangshan is also a famous place for Chinese teas of high quality.

Yuanyang Rice Terraces

The Yuanyang Rice Terraces in Yunnan are so magnificent and photogenic that they’ve kept Thierry living in Yunnan for the last eight years. He even owns a coffee shop near the terraces. So he has been up and down the terraces a few times, his camera likely has a bit of the land’s dirt in its seams, and he knows the weather and best angles by heart.

Thierry can show you the terraces’ silvery bands of water turning into a collage of colors and reflections in the early morning sunrise, the mists shrouding the hills and bright pools of reflected light in beautiful mystery, and the rustic lives of the local Hani and Yi people, who generations ago built up these terraces in a feat of technological ingenuity.

The Yuanyang Rice Terraces are in the southern mountains of Yunnan province, about 100 kilometers from the Vietnam border. The Terraces are divided into three separate scenic areas, which you will visit: Duoyishu, Bada, and Laohuzui.
