DETAILS OF THE WORKSHOP

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

Join Thierry Bornier for a photography expedition to the unspoiled photographic paradise that is Bashang. Then, discover a quaint and photogenic fishing village in Xiapu.

ITINERARY:

Day 1 – Sep 19: Beijing Arrival

Please plan your travel arrangements such that you are scheduled to arrive in Beijing no later than this afternoon. In the evening, Thierry will meet up with everyone in the hotel lobby for welcome dinner and presentation of the workshop.

Day 2 – Sep 20: Beijing to Bashang

This morning, we will board a coach from the hotel for the transfer from Beijing to Bashang (8hr drive). Upon arrival, we will check in at the hotel and get some rest.

Day 3 to Day 7 – Sep 21 to 25: Bashang

Each of these five days in Bashang will follow a similar schedule, but with different shooting locations. First, every morning starts early to catch the sun rising over the grassy plains, sparkling slightly from the morning dew. After the morning shoot, we will return to the hotel for lunch and some rest, before heading out for another photography session. The locations of choice each day will be dictated by weather and the status of the leaf color change on the prairie. Of course, you won’t be just looking at tranquil plains and rivers all day, but also visiting villages and experiencing the lives and culture of the nomadic peoples that call Bashang home.

In the evening, we return to the hotel for dinner and a group discussion lead by Thierry. There is no better way to improve your photography than to exchange ideas and tips with other photographers, especially when Thierry is among them.

Day 8 – Sept 26: Bashang to Beijing

After one final morning shoot in Bashang, we make our way back to Beijing by coach (8hr drive), where we spend the night.

Day 9 – Sept 27: Beijing to Xiapu

The day starts early with a highspeed train ride out to Xiapu (9.5 hrs, in luxurious business class seats that convert into flatbeds), the second destination of the workshop.

Day 10 to Day 14 – Sept 28 to Oct 2: Xiapu

Day 10 to 14 will be spent amidst Xiapu’s quaint fishing village atmosphere. Each morning will start early to catch the village’s fisherman preparing their boats and nets for the day’s work while the sun rises at their backs, their silhouettes against the shining waters from different angles.

After the morning shoots, the group will return to the hotel for a full breakfast and a rest. Then, spend the rest of each day exploring Xiapu’s lively fish markets, quiet, rustic corners, creaking wooden docks, and much more. Every evening, the group will have dinner together, followed by a group discussion about technique and composition with everybody’s photos.

Day 15 – Oct 3: Xiapu to Shanghai

After a final morning photo shoot on Huangshan, catch a fast train back to Shanghai, where the workshop ends.

DESTINATION OVERVIEW

Bashang

Roughly 300km north of Beijing, near the border of Hebei and the Inner Mongolia plateau, hides one of the best kept secrets in the photography world—Bashang Plateau. The unspoiled prairie is on average 1,300-1,600 meters above sea level, and home to nomads and grazing flocks of sheep and herds of cows.

The Bashang grasslands feature a variety of landscapes and an abundance of vegetation/foliage, such as Siberian silver birch, poplar, maple, oak, elm, willow, and shrubs. Every fall, the leaves turn a gorgeous mixture of colors, dotted across the hills and valleys that occasionally see a large dust-up crossing the landscape. That would be a herd of horses galloping across the plateau, crashing through its creeks and rivers. In the winter, the snow-covered grasslands make for another stunning sight to behold.

A visit to Bashang also comes with delicious opportunities to get a taste of the cuisine, like a whole roasted lamb, eaten regularly by the people that live there.

Xiapu (Fujian)

Xiapu, known as the most charming fishing village in China, is located in the northeast of Fujian province. The village’s surrounding hills provide great vantage points from which to compose stunning photographs. With your camera, recreate the scenes of traditional Chinese ink paintings, of the sun rising or setting, of fishing boats coming in and out, throwing and pulling nets behind them, and of massive nets strung between tall bamboo poles, hung with the day’s prizes.

After the Yuanyang Rice Terraces, Xiapu is Thierry’s second favorite location to shoot in China. The waters’ easy currents and sunny weather make the village’s mudflats rich in kelp, laver, oyster and yellow croakers. So the village is not only a prime location to photograph fisherman at work, but also a great place to taste their fresh catches. Xiapu also has a bit of variety for photographers—low-lying beaches with stunning sunrise, working fishermen communities and a picturesque old banyan tree forest, just to mention some.
